News >> Bertoni And Knox Riding Hot Hands Into Mylan Event

Twenty-Eight Past Players Battling for the FedExCup

Longs, SC— Current NGA Hooters Tour member Travis Bertoni is quickly making a name for himself on the Nationwide Tour. Bertoni, who won the NGA Hooters Tour’s Georgia Sports Orthopedic Specialists Classic earlier this season, shot rounds of 68-70-65-67 to finish second alone and two shots behind winner and former NGA Hooters Tour player Chris Kirk last week on the Nationwide Tour.

The runner-up finish was Bertoni’s second top-10 in a row and vaulted him from 104thon the money list to 52nd. If Bertoni, of Paso Robles, Calif., can repeat the feat or even win, he would likely move inside the top 25 and one step closer to securing a PGA Tour card for the 2011 season.

Current NGA member Russell Knox would need a win to threaten the top 25. But if he keeps up his hot play, that may not be out of the question. Knox, who had an eight-stroke win on the NGA Hooters Tour in August, continued his stellar stretch of golf last week in The Knoxville News Sentinel Open.

Knox, playing on an exemption earnerd through the NGA Hooters Tour, closed with a Sunday 66 to finish T7 and qualified for this week’s Nationwide Tour event. The Mylan Classic will be Knox’s third start on the Nationwide Tour.

Current NGA Hooters Tour members Rob Oppenheim, who finished T16 in Knoxville; Ted Potter Jr., who is coming off a third-place effort in last week’s NGA event; Joe Affrunti, a former winner on the NGA Hooters Tour; Sam Saunders, the grandson of Arnold Palmer; and Manuel Villegas, a Monday Qualifier, will all be in the field for the Mylan Classic at the Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg, Penn.

In the second round of the FedExCup Playoffs, 28 former NGA Hooters Tour players will be vying to up their standings in the Deutsche Bank Championship at the TPC Boston.

Last week at The Barclays, Kevin Streelman, a winner on the NGA Hooters Tour, finished at 10-under par and T3. With his top-five finish, Streelman vaulted from 102ndin the standings to 18th. Fellow NGA member and winner Vaughn Taylor shot 9-under par and finished T5. Former NGA Hooters Tour player Ryan Palmer also finished T5. Taylor moved from 38thto 21stin the standings, while Palmer jumped from 23rdto 13th. Jim Furyk and Bubba Watson are the highest ranked former NGA players at eighth and ninth, respectively.

If any of the 28 past NGA players can win this week, it will be the 10thvictory on the PGA Tour this season by former NGA golfers.

The NGA Hooters Tour is the 3rdlargest men’s 72-hole professional golf tour in the country behind the PGA and Nationwide Tours and boasts an impressive list of alumni.

Stewart Cink, the 2009 British Open Champion; Lucas Glover, the 2009 US Open Champion; Zach Johnson, the 2007 Masters Champion; Shaun Micheel, the 2003 PGA Champion; Ben Curtis, winner of the 2003 British Open; Jim Furyk, winner of the 2003 US Open; Lee Janzen, a two-time US Open winner; John Daly, a British Open and PGA Champion; Tom Lehman, winner of the British Open; David Toms, a past PGA Champion; Chad Campbell, the 2003 Tour Championship winner; Vaughn Taylor, a two-time Reno Tahoe Open winner; and Craig Perks, winner of the TPC, tested their mettle on the NGA Hooters Tour before tasting success on golf’s grandest stage.

All told, the NGA Hooters Tour’s alumni have an incredible 12 “Majors” to their credit. The NGA Hooters Tour has helped hundreds of professionals acquire their PGA, Senior PGA, and Nationwide Tour cards. In fact, 48% of the players that earned their 2010 PGA Tour card, and 53% of the players that earned full exempt status on the Nationwide Tour started their careers on the NGA Hooters Tour.
