Statesville, NC (June 11, 2006)…Michael Letzig (Richmond, MO) fired a five-under par 67 in Sunday’s final round of the Statesville Classic presented by Comfort-Sleep Inns Of Statesville over the 6594 yard, par 72 Statesville Country Club to garner his second Hooters Tour win of the season.“Winning this four round event today helps justify the rain shortened event I had in Chicago last month,” said the 26 year old Letzig.
“Winning earlier this year in Chicago made me feel really calm coming into today’s final round,” said the third year pro. “I was actually really confident all week knowing that I could probably make a lot of birdies on the short par fives and par fours.”
The former New Mexico golfer fired rounds of 65-69-66-67 for a four day total of twenty-one under par 267 and three stroke victory over third round leader Emmett Turner (Augusta, GA), Eric Jorgenson (Orlando, FL) and Dustin Bray (Pinehurst, NC). The trio finished the tournament at eighteen-under par 270.
“I had my brother Darren as a caddie this week and he turned out to be great for me.” “It was great having a second opinion on all the putts and that made me more comfortable having someone else reading my putts.”
Jay Woodson (Powhaton, VA) headed up a group of golfers in fifth place, five back of Letzig at sixteen-under par 272.
Dustin Bray (Pinehurst) headed up the North Carolina contingent that made the cut in The Statesville Classic. Bray carded a five-under par 67 Sunday and finished the event at eighteen-under par 270, good enough for a tie of second. High Point’s Jack Ferguson finished the week in Statesville at thirteen-under par 275, while Derek Brown (Walnut Cove) and Justin Walters (Raleigh) finished the week at 276 (12-under par). Raleigh’s Jason Moon rounds out the North Carolina contingent firing a four day total of two-under par 286.
Letzig collects a career best $24,000 for his second win in four tournaments while Bray, Jorgenson and Turner take home $8,881.67 for their efforts.
The Hooters Tour heads north to Richmond, Virginia for The Base CampRealty Chesdin Landing Open June 12-18.
