Auburn, AL (April 16, 2006)…Tommy Biershenk (Boiling Springs, SC) fired a two-under par 70 in Sunday’s final round of the Auburn-Opelika Tourism Bureau Classic over the 7090 yard, par 72 Auburn Links @ Mill Creek to take his second career Hooters Tour title.“It’s great to finally win again out here, it’s been awhile (8 years),”said the 32 year old Biershenk after his round. “I won on the Tarheel Tour last year, but to win out here on this Tour shows me that my game is finally going in the right way again.”
“I mean everyone knows I have been in a slump, losing my Nationwide card and all, but winning today tells me my game is back.”
The former Clemson Tiger fired rounds of 68-65-68-70 for a four day total of seventeen-under par 271 and a convincing three stroke victory over a group of four golfers. The group included 2001 NCAA Champion Nick Gilliam, Gainesville (70), Andrew Pratt, Knoxville, TN (69), Kris Blanks, Rincon, GA (68) and Michael Letzig, Richmond, MO (71).
Boo Weekly (Jay, FL) and David Miller (Daphne, AL) finished tied for 6th after tying for the low rounds of the day with six-under par 66’s and four day totals of thirteen-under par 275.
Former Auburn Tiger Jay Mundy fired a four-under par 68 Sunday to finish at seven-under par 281 for the week, good enough for tie for 21st. Former teammate Kevin Haefner carded a final round 74 Sunday to end the Classic at one-under par 287, tied for 56th.
Biershenk collects $24,000 for his second career title on the Hooters Tour, while the group in second earned $8,067 for their efforts.
“I am looking forward to playing in McCormick next week,” said Biershenk. “Hopefully I can make it three in a row for the ClemsonUniversity, since Brent DelaHoussaye won last week.”
The Hooters Tour heads east to McCormick, South Carolina and Monticello Golf Club for the SavannahLakes Resort Classic April 17-23, the first $200,000 Major of the year.
